Rug Care FAQ

GOLDEN STATE RUG has been in Fresno, CA since 1927.  For more than 80 years, people have trusted their finest rugs with Golden State for cleaning and repairs.  Listed below are answers to frequently asked questions regarding the care and cleaning of your fine rugs.

Q.    How do I keep my rug from fading?

 A.    Avoid fading and sun damage by keeping your rug out of too much intense sunlight from doors or windows.  You may want to consider UV protection on windows.  Shift your area rug monthly if the sunlight is hitting one area daily.

Q.    Will I harm my rug by vacuuming it?

A.    Vacuuming your rugs is the BEST thing that you can do help keep them up between professional cleanings.  Dust and dirt that get caught between fibers will wear the fibers down faster.  Try not to over-brush these fibers by avoiding vacuuming with a beater bar.  We suggest using a canister vacuum or the upholstery attachment on your upright and run it over the top of the rug fibers.  Try to vacuum WITH the nap, which causes less friction.

Q.  Why do you take my wool rug away to clean it?

A.    Our shop is equipped with the latest tools and technology to properly care for your rugs.  Wool rugs are first thoroughly vacuumed to extract the soil, then submerged in water and gently scrubbed.  We spot treat, if needed, and use dehumidifiers to hasten the drying process.  Fringes are hand groomed and your rugs are brushed, groomed and rolled before they're ready to return to you.

Q.  Do I need a pad under my rug?

A.    Most likely, depending on the surface you're covering with your rug.  If your rug is placed on wall to wall carpeting, a pad is unnecessary.  If your rug is covering marble, wood, ceramic or slate flooring, a good quality pad will prevent slipping and protect your floors and rugs.  We carry new WunderGrip pads to hold your rugs in place.

Q.  What should I do if I spill on my rug?

A.    Before we can professionally spot treat and clean your rug, try to minimize staining by treating the area as soon as possible.  Quickly blot up any liquid spills with a white absorbent cloth or white paper towels.  Scrape up any solids with the end of a knife or spoon.  Apply a spot removal agent to a clean towel or cloth, using the solution sparingly.  Always work inwards from the edge to the middle of the spot to help prevent spreading.  Do not rub the fibers, as this may cause the spot to spread and distort the pile.  Blot the area as dry as possible with a clean white towel.

 Q.  The fringe on my Oriental rug is looking pretty ragged.  Can it be fixed?

A.  Rug fringes are usually made of cotton, but may be wool or silk and the loose or low yarn twist and open ends are prone to deterioration with normal wear and tear.  Since fringes extend beyond the rug pad, they are subject to the full impact of the abrasion of foot traffic and vacuuming.  Special care is needed in cleaning fringes, such as our hand grooming.  Your rug fringe can be replaced when needed, bringing new life to your cherished rug.
